Barrett, Lewis, McMillan placed on watch lists

Three Ohio State Buckeyes football players were placed on preseason watch lists, the Maxwell Football Club announced July 5. Quarterback J.T. Barrett is on the Maxwell Award watch list. This award honors college football’s player of the year. The Maxwell Award has been given to America’s top college football player since 1937. The award is named in honor of Robert W. “Tiny” Maxwell, whose contribution to the game included stints as a player, sportswriter and official. Barrett was fifth in the Heisman Trophy voting as a freshman in 2014. He was 4-1 as a starter last season including wins over Michigan (42-13) and Notre Dame (44-28) in the BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl. He enters this season needed 13 touchdown passes for the program’s career mark, set by Bobby Hoying with 57. Barrett is responsible for 77 touchdowns in his career, 11 fewer than the school record 88 set by Braxton Miller. Defensive end Tyquan Lewis and junior middle linebacker Raekwon McMillon are on the Bednarik Award watch list. This award honors college football’s best defensive player. This award has been presented to college football’s best defensive player since 1995. Chuck Bednarik was a standout at Penn and played in the NFL with the Philadelphia Eagles. He is a member of the College Hall of Fame (Class of 1969) and Pro Football Hall of Fame (1967). Lewis led the Buckeyes with 8 sacks last year.
