Boodini's picks: Big Ten controlling football, thanks to Urban Meyer

Just a simple recitation of the cold, hard facts. In regards to winning national championships and producing NFL-quality talent, the Big Ten largely suffered in comparison to the SEC and other nationally-focused programs such as Florida State and USC. The standard response from the Big Ten apologists was that trusted combination of whininess and wishful thinking. But this season, the Big Ten has played the best September football of any conference nationally. It’s not a fluke. The conference that was once perfectly comfortable in its own little world of self-relevance is now pushing borders. And it can thank Ohio State coach Urban Meyer for changing how the Big Ten conducted business. The best thing that happened to Big Ten football was former OSU coach Jim Tressel’s unceremonious fall from grace in the aftermath of Tattoo-gate five years ago. Had Tressel stayed at Ohio State, the Buckeyes still would’ve dominated their conference rivals. But the goals would’ve ended…
