Outsiders might be griping about the way Ohio State seems to have plateaued — or even seemingly regressed — this season.A nail-biter against Northwestern after an upset loss to Penn State is not the way Buckeyes fans wanted to enter pivotal November. Inside the Woody Hayes Athletic Center, though, the vibe is decidedly more upbeat. Coach Urban Meyer even joked during his Monday news conference about switching places with a reporter during playful banter about whether critical questions about the Buckeyes were fair. The Buckeyes certainly haven’t been the dominating team they were early. In their first four games, they outscored opponents 228-37. In their past four, Ohio State’s margin is 113-84. That’s partly because of Ohio State’s deficiencies, notably the lack of an explosive passing game. It’s also because the competition has gotten much stiffer. Northwestern is no patsy. Now comes the crucial final month, starting with No. 9 Nebraska on Saturday night in the only prime-time game this season at Ohio Stadium and finishing, of course, with No. 2 Michigan.
