There’s something special going on with the Ohio State defense this season. It is scoring with interception returns like never before.But is it a surprise that the Buckeyes — No. 5 in the College Football Playoff rankings — have set a school record with six interceptions returned for touchdowns, two of them coming last week by safeties Damon Webb and Malik Hooker in a 62-3 over of Nebraska? Not completely, at least to coach Urban Meyer. “I think it’s emphasis. I don’t know if it’s necessarily new, because we’ve had some pick-sixes before,” Meyer said before mentioning defensive end Steve Miller, who had one against Alabama in a 2014 playoff semifinal. “I just think every once in awhile you’ll see teams emphasize certain things, and we’ve certainly emphasized that, and it’s paid off.” He didn’t mean just emphasizing interceptions but the effort part. Take, for example, Webb’s return against Nebraska. The interception came about because linebacker Raekwon McMillan read his keys and backed off into the slant zone, letting quarterback Tommy Armstrong’s eyes take him to the passing lane.
