Close to home, we should have known something was in Saturday’s stars when Division III power Mount Union lost for the first time in 112 regular season games and 11 years, falling 31-28 to John Carroll. The Purple Raiders apparently handed off their bad karma to the school that made “Purple Reign” a buzz phrase because, on the bigger boy stage, No. 4 Washington lost at home in prime time to USC while, simultaneously, No. 3 Michigan also suffered its first defeat on a walk-off field goal at offensively-challenged Iowa. Which would be seismic news in itself if the Huskies and Wolverines weren’t simply following the lead of No. 2 Clemson, beaten at home by unranked Pittsburgh.
