Buckeye Football Notebook: 'They call me Meatball'


It has long been ordained that the only Buckeye quarterback who gets to go by his real name on this team is J.T. Barrett, which means that incoming freshman quarterback Tate Martell had to be given a new nom de guerre as well. Barrett started the trend when Joe Burrow arrived and Barrett, whose given name is Joe Thomas Barrett, couldn’t allow there to be two Joes in the same quarterback room, so he decided that it would be best if Burrow started going by “John”. The tradition continued when Dwayne Haskins arrived last year. Barrett passed down the privilege of renaming the new guy to Burrow, who thought long and hard about Haskins’ new name before finally dubbing him “Ross” because, as he said at the time, it was the worst name that he could think of.
