Indiana basketball kicks off March Madness by firing Tom Crean: What can Ohio State learn?

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Give Indiana an A+ for the timing. The Hoosiers fired head basketball coach Tom Crean on Thursday, right as the ball was tipped in the first game of the NCAA Tournament. Nice touch. Crean, who spent nine seasons at Indiana, guided the team to an 18-16 finish this season and a first-round exit from the NIT. He also won two Big Ten regular-season championships and went to the Sweet 16 three times in the last six seasons. His termination could be viewed as a bit misguided, but at the same time it’s not surprising. Even with a Big Ten title and a Sweet 16 berth last year, it felt like this was coming for Crean. He’ll land another job somewhere, and likely pretty quickly, but for Indiana what Crean did was deemed not good enough. How this shakes out for Indiana can teach Ohio State some lessons,…
