COLUMBUS, Ohio — Maybe athletic director Gene Smith is just a shrewd negotiator. Or maybe Greg Schiano and Kevin Wilson are just swell guys who didn’t want to force Ohio State to break the bank on their behalf. Maybe it’s just the Urban Meyer Effect. Whatever it is, Ohio State just got two of the best coordinators in college football at a bargain price. Cleveland.com obtained new contract information for Schiano, Wilson and five other Ohio State assistants on Wednesday. Schiano signed a one-year deal that will pay him $700,000 as defensive coordinator. Wilson signed a two-year deal worth $1.4 million — that’s $650,000 this year and $750,000 next year — to be offensive coordinator. In world where million-dollar assistant coaches are becoming more and more prevalent, it’s frankly shocking that Ohio State was able to add Wilson and keep Schiano for anything less than that dollar amount.
