COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State backup quarterback Joe Burrow is “pretty close” to returning Urban Meyer said Tuesday. Burrow, a redshirt sophomore who served as J.T. Barrett’s backup last season, broke his thumb after hitting his right hand on a teammate’s helmet during practice. He had surgery on this throwing thumb two weeks ago and the team said he was out indefinitely. That meant redshirt freshman Dwayne Haskins moved into the No. 2 spot after battling Burrow during preseason camp. Haskins didn’t play in the opener against Indiana, and backup quarterbacks aren’t on anyone’s mind for Oklahoma on Saturday, unless something happens to Barrett. But the stretch that follows – against Army, UNLV and Rutgers – should present the best opportunity for young players to gain experience in potential blowouts. Getting back before then would be a big deal for Burrow and would show that the backup quarterback battle is back…
