COLUMBUS, Ohio — Jeff Hamms says he had one intention when he decided to make the weekend drive from Surfside Beach, S.C., to Columbus. He wanted a rally in support of Ohio State head football coach Urban Meyer. Hamms — who inherited the nickname “Tennessee Jeff” as a frequent caller to 97.1 WBNS-FM and other local radio stations because he called from a cabin in Tennessee – didn’t graduate from Ohio State but is an unabashed, die-hard Buckeyes fan. He read Meyer’s statement on Friday. He was compelled to defend Meyer, who remains on administrative leave pending an investigation by a panel appointed by the Ohio State University Board of Trustees in the fallout from assistant coach Zach Smith’s firing on July 23.
