Ohio State's Urban Meyer suspended 3 games for mishandling abuse claims, will return vs. Tulane

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State on Wednesday suspended head football coach Urban Meyer for the first three games of the season, and suspended athletic director Gene Smith without pay from Aug. 31-Sept. 18 following an investigation into how they handled domestic abuse allegations former assistant coach Zach Smith in 2015. “Although Urban Meyer nor Gene Smith condone or covered up the alleged domestic abuse by Zach Smith, they failed to take sufficient management action relating to Zach Smith’s misconduct and retained an assistant coach who was not performing as an appropriate role model for OSU student-athletes,” the university said in a statement. Meyer will be suspended through Sept. 2 without pay, and not permitted to coach in the first three games of the season against Oregon State, Rutgers and TCU.
