COLUMBUS, Ohio — Whatever you thought of the July and August search for truth around former assistant coach Zach Smith and football coach Urban Meyer, Ohio State held some responsibility in the matter. Meyer and athletic director Gene Smith could have acted to remove Zach Smith from the football program before July of this summer, and their failures there are what led Ohio State to suspend them for the start of this football season. That story, in some ways, will never completely go away, and both Meyer and Gene Smith have apologized for how they handled Zach Smith as an employee. Since then, tentacles from the Zach Smith situation, and other issues completely separate from it, have converged to complicate the picture around Ohio State football.
