College football focus: Michigan, Ohio State wobble into showdown next weekend

A week before their annual showdown, Michigan and Ohio State failed to play their best football while escaping with wins against opponents that are below .500 for the season. Looking ahead or vulnerable? The Buckeyes were especially fortunate when Maryland failed to convert a potential game-winning, 2-point conversion with a receiver wide open in the end zone. The Wolverines, meanwhile, relied on the leg of Jake Moody for the majority of their points and held on after Indiana pulled within one possession in the fourth quarter. Next Saturday, the two national powers will play for the Big Ten East championship in Columbus, Ohio, and a matchup with Northwestern in the conference title game. The Wolverines also are playing for their playoff lives while the Buckeyes are likely just playing to spoil Michigan’s chance of staying among the country’s top four teams.
