COLUMBUS, Ohio — Earle Bruce was Michigan week. The former head coach of the Buckeyes from 1979 to 1987 went 5-4 against the Wolverines. He then became an integral part of Michigan week during the Jim Tressel era, and remained connected as ever to the Ohio State football program as the mentor of Urban Meyer. Bruce died on April 20 at age 87. This is the first Michigan week without him. I asked Meyer about this first Michigan game since Bruce’s death. Meyer was a young OSU staffer during Bruce’s final two seasons as the OSU coach. “Obviously very close to him,” Meyer said. “In 1986, that was the first time that I experienced it with coach, and then obviously the 1987 game up in Ann Arbor, that was his last game as a coach.
