COLUMBUS, Ohio — An old hand and an old friend have been tasked with giving Ohio State a new defense under Ryan Day. Jeff Hafley, who worked with Day with the San Francisco 49ers in 2016, will join Greg Mattison, a veteran college and NFL assistant for more than 40 years, as co-coordinators of the 2019 Ohio State defense. They’re joining the one sure defensive staff holdover in Larry Johnson, who is getting a title bump to associate head coach as well as the defensive line coach. The other two OSU defensive assistants haven’t been announced yet, but Day wasn’t going to settle for the status quo with a defense that wasn’t even middle of the pack in the Big Ten this year.
