Schiano joined the Buckeyes’ staff in 2016. Greg Schiano will not return to Ohio State as the defensive coordinator next season under Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day. Former Michigan defensive line coach Greg Mattison and former San Francisco 49ers defensive backs coach Jeff Hafley will serve as co-defensive coordinators for the Buckeyes, the program announced Monday. Additionally, Ohio State defensive line coach Larry Johnson has been promoted to associate head coach, but will still oversee the defensive line unit. Hafley worked with Day in 2016 when the two worked on the 49ers staff. Hafley spent each of the past three seasons as San Francisco’s defensive backs coach. Before that, he oversaw the Cleveland Browns secondary for two seasons and held a similar role with the Buccaneers.
