Big Ten basketball players and coaches come and go. Mascots are in for the long haul. So with the United Center hosting the Big Ten men’s basketball tournament this week, we rated and ranked these odd but beloved creatures. We assessed them on the following factors: how appropriate the mascot is to the school or state; the creativity of the costume; the mascot’s name; and how creepy it is on a scale of 1 to 10 — the less creepy, the better. Note: Sadly, three Big Ten schools do not have official mascots. Michigan briefly had “Biff the (live) Wolverine” but dropped it; “Hoosiers” is the nickname for Indiana residents and the school had a bison mascot in the 1960s but no mascot now; and Chief Illiniwek was Illinois’ symbol until 2007, and now the school considered an otter as its mascot.
