COLUMBUS, Ohio — When Ohio State hired Chris Holtmann in June of 2017, some OSU fans thought athletic director Gene Smith had missed his chance. Dayton coach Archie Miller, a former assistant with the Buckeyes, had been hired by Indiana 10 weeks earlier. Thursday, Holtmann wore two pairs of pants on the sideline at the United Center in Chicago. His own, and the pair he had coached off of Miller. My assumption was that Indiana was going to blow the Buckeyes off the court in their Big Ten Tournament matchup, and this would be an explanation of why, despite the results, Holtmann was still the better hire. Instead, with Ohio State’s 79-75 win, the result confirmed the hypothesis. Both Holtman and Miller are in their second seasons. Ohio State was better last year. Ohio State is better this year.
