Joey Lane will miss being the leader of Ohio State’s ‘towel gang’

Ohio State senior guard Joey Lane hasn’t played more than six minutes in a game this season. And his major contribution to the Buckeyes’ 79-75 win over Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament on Thursday was strumming an air guitar on camera as he cheered Keyshawn Woods’ 3-pointer that gave Ohio State a 20-point cushion with 7½ minutes left. But don’t tell this kid he’s not a rock star. He’s probably Ohio State’s most famous former walk-on. He received a scholarship as a sophomore. Teammates voted him captain. Fans randomly chant his name during games to urge the coaching staff to give him some playing time. “I do (get recognized on campus), which will never get old,” said Lane, who was known as “Joey Smoke” at Deerfield High School. “That’s something I’ll definitely miss.
