Smith is a listed by several sites as 6-6, 205 pound wide receiver, but OSU had explored the possibility of using him at tight end. Smith was a two-star athlete out of Huber Heights Wayne and did have basketball offers. On his initial visit to UC, he did also meet with then-coach Mick Cronin in addition to Luke Fickell. Smith was First Team All-Ohio under Jay Minton at Wayne and was listed as the 39th best receiver overall by Rivals and third in the state of Ohio. 247sports.com listed Smith 126th nationally coming out of Wayne, the school that once also featured former Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller.
