How Ohio State football linebacker Pete Werner fared as the Bullet against Cincinnati | Buckeye Rewatch


COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State football added the Bullet position — a hybrid linebacker/defensive back — when co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison came down from Michigan. The original plan, according to the Buckeyes, was for players such as Brendon White and Jahsen Wint who were recruited as safeties to handle that new position. However, through two games a different trend has emerged. Sam linebacker Pete Werner continues to handle a lot of those Bullet responsibilities, with slot cornerback Shaun Wade typically the 11th man on the defense. That look emerged as the base defense Ohio State used while rolling Cincinnati 42-0 on Saturday in its first shutout since 2017. Those players designed as Bullets had practiced with the linebacker group, so perhaps it should not come as a surprise that a linebacker ended up taking a lot of snaps in that role.
