Four Buckeyes named finalists, could give Ohio State its first major individual national award in 11 years


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ezekiel Elliott, Joey Bosa, Braxton Miller, Michael Thomas, J.T. Barrett, Ryan Shazier, Terrelle Pryor, Marshon Lattimore — the best Ohio State players of the last decade shared one thing in common. None of them won a major national individual award. Pat Elflein and Billy Price won the Rimington Trophy as the best center in college football in 2016 and 2017, and that’s nothing to sneeze at. But that’s rather specific. Best defensive player, best running back, best lineman, best linebacker, best quarterback, best receiver — a Buckeye hasn’t won an award like that since 2008. In that year, Malcolm Jenkins won the Thorpe Award as the top defensive back and James Laurinaitis won the Lott Impact Trophy as the best defensive player. That should soon change.
