MARION, Ohio — Buckeye Chuck, Ohio’s prognosticating groundhog, agreed with Punxsutawney Phil this year, predicting an early spring. Chuck’s prediction in Marion came about 20 minutes after Phil’s prediction in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. A crowd of what seemed to be more than a hundred huddled around the stage to hear the prediction, grouping near provided heaters. It wasn’t snowing in Marion, unlike in Gobbler’s Knob. There were cloudy skies though. As the tradition goes, if the groundhog emerges from his burrow and sees his shadow, there would be six more weeks of winter. Hosts joked that they could see light shining through the clouds, which could lead Chuck to see his shadow. An audience member yelled back “close your eyes!” Chuck didn’t see his shadow, so he forecasts spring is on the way. Buckeye Chuck became the official state groundhog in 1979.
