
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Kerry Coombs, the most highly-caffeinated Buckeye in the building, stepped to the podium Wednesday holding a coffee cup, later saw athletic director Gene Smith in the back of the room and raised his arms and shouted “I’m back, baby!” and eventually had to stop himself in the middle of a story about missing Ohio State to say, ‘I get goosebumps talking about this.” It’s no surprise that Coombs is back at Ohio State. The question is why he ever left. Coombs answered that Wednesday with a conspiratorial tale of sitting in defensive meeting rooms in 2012 and 2013 with Mike Vrabel, as co-coordinators Luke Fickell and Everett Withers spun plans at the front of the room. They were the four defensive coaches in the first two years of the Urban Meyer era, and Vrabel and Coombs whispered that they’d hire each other when they became head coaches.…
