
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The red (scarlet?) M in Columbus is crossed out on the sign in front of the new Graduate Hotel on High Street, just down the street from the Ohio State University. A chair in the lobby proclaims “Sloopy Hang On,” and a Buckeye version of Mount Rushmore behind the check-in counter features well-known OSU athletes Jesse Owens, Archie Griffin, Jack Nicklaus and Katie Smith. It may not be the most welcoming place for University of Michigan fans. But no worries — Ann Arbor has its own maize-and-blue version of this small hotel chain, rapidly expanding in college towns throughout the United States. The Graduate Columbus is one of several hospitality-related developments popping up throughout the state capital, which is in the midst of a hotel boom.
