Ohio State football No. 2 behind Clemson in ESPN’s preseason FPI rankings


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football found another familiar No. 2 spot in a preseason national ranking — looking up at a familiar No. 1. ESPN’s preseason Football Power Index, released Monday, has Clemson No. 1 and the Buckeyes No. 2. (A different ESPN-backed rating, SP+, had OSU second to Alabama.) FPI also projects Ohio State to have the nation’s second-best offense, behind Oklahoma. The Buckeyes are also projected to have the sixth-best defense. Only Clemson (fourth offense, first defense) is ranked higher in both. Oklahoma, Alabama and Penn State round out the top five, with defending Big Ten West Division champion Wisconsin at No. 6. Defending national champion LSU is No. 12. Other OSU opponents include No. 14 Oregon, No. 16 Michigan, No. 22 Nebraska, No. 26 Indiana and No. 27 Iowa.
