Ohio State University tries again to wrest control of the word ‘the,’ takes aim at Marc Jacobs


CLEVELAND, Ohio — Ohio State University is taking another stab at trying to take control of the word “the.” The state’s flagship university on Wednesday asked the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to reconsider a decision from September to reject its attempt to trademark the word, stylized as “THE” in all caps, in ways that signify its association with the school on T-shirts and hats. The arguments the university made in its filing Wednesday track those it has made since it applied for its trademark in August.
