
COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Big Ten Conference’s moratorium on organized team activities that runs through April 6 did not require member schools to close their athletic facilities. Ohio State did it anyway, and athletic director Gene Smith said it was about maintaining a consistent message with the rest of the university. “We felt we needed to not encourage any group activities,” Smith said. So while the Woody Hayes Athletic Center has been “disease-bombed” — to use Smith’s term for this week’s bacteria cleansing — no Buckeye football players or other athletes are allowed to use it. Ohio State athletes who live in dormitories are required to move out, just like any other student. The athletic department has encouraged those athletes to stay at their homes, instead of returning to Columbus from spring break.
