
COLUMBUS — For a program with Ohio State football’s success and prestige, the NFL Draft history of its quarterbacks — and their subsequent success in the league — seems hard to believe. In the common draft era, one Buckeye quarterback went in the first round: Art Schlichter, fourth overall to Baltimore in 1982. Only six times has an Ohio State quarterback thrown for even 10 touchdowns in an NFL season, and Mike Tomczak is responsible for four of them. While other Buckeye quarterbacks won Heisman Trophies or led national championship runs, the program’s reputation for developing the position did not equal that of its defensive backs, defensive ends and running backs. Surprising? It likely surprised Ryan Day as well when he took over as Ohio State’s co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach in 2017.
