Ohio State intends ‘to safely have a football season,’ per retiring President Michael Drake


COLUMBUS, Ohio — Retiring Ohio State University President Michael Drake remains optimistic about the Buckeyes having a 2020 football season. Drake announced during Wednesday’s Board of Trustees meeting that campus instruction would resume on Aug. 25. He said work continues on a plan to return athletes to practice and competition. “Regarding football, our hope and intention is to safely have a football season, with an audience spaced out in our stadium, but we haven’t made any final decisions,” Drake said in a news release. All Ohio State sports have been prohibited from organized team activities since mid-March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ohio State football players are scheduled to resume voluntary workouts on Monday. Those workouts will be limited to 10 or fewer players and will involve CDC distancing guidelines and other health-conscious measures.
