
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Francis Schmidt, the coach responsible for the tradition of awarding gold pants to Ohio State players and coaches after wins over Michigan, headlines OSU’s Athletics Hall of Fame’s 2020 class. Two other former Buckeye football players, Aaron Brown and Regis Monahan, are also among the 12 inductees. Schmidt once said of the Wolverines, “Those fellows put their pants on one leg at a time, the same as everyone else.” That led to the gold pants tradition. He led Ohio State to a 39-16-1 record over seven seasons, including a Big Ten championship in 1935. From 1934-37, his teams outscored Michigan 114-0. He led Ohio State to its first outright Big Ten championship in 19 years in 1939. The College Football Hall of Famer also coached basketball and baseball at OSU.
