
After six years of service, Michael V. Drake has his final day as president of Ohio State University. His successor, Kristina M. Johnson, former chancellor of the State University of New York System, is now tasked with university leadership during a turbulent time for our students and our city. The recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery and countless other Black bodies at the hands of law enforcement have precipitated desperate cries for justice and reform. Student activists around Ohio and in our own campus community have taken to the streets, their calls for divestment and accountability coinciding with the administrative reappointment of the university’s first Black president. And now that we will be welcoming in Johnson amid these calls for justice, we must ask our new president: How will you protect the lives and ensure the overall well-being of your Black Buckeyes?
