Ohio State and other college football teams could begin season Aug. 29 with NCAA waiver: Report


INDIANAPOLIS — The Big Ten Conference cancelled its non-conference fall schedules in part to give football teams more flexibility for scheduling games during the COVID-19 pandemic. The NCAA reportedly made another contribution to that effort on Monday night. According to Yahoo’s Pete Thamel, the NCAA has issued a waiver for 2020 allowing teams or conferences to schedule games as early as Aug. 29. That week — known informally as “Week Zero” — has traditionally been limited to games for which extra travel time was necessary, such as at Hawaii or overseas. Recently, TV networks began petitioning to hold games in the continental United States in that week as well. According to Yahoo, enough teams had requested a waiver for 2020 that the NCAA issued a blanket waiver.
