Ohio State administration wanted to delay Big Ten decision rather than cancel football for fall 2020


COLUMBUS, Ohio — As the Big Ten Conference opted to cancel football and all 2020 fall sports due to the coronavirus pandemic and consider playing in the spring, Ohio State stated clearly that it did not support that decision. In a news release, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith said he and incoming President Kristina M. Johnson “were totally aligned in our efforts to delay the start of the season rather than postpone.” In a BTN interview, Smith clarified that Ohio State preferred pushing the first weekend of games back to Sept. 26 or Oct. 3.
