
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Four-star linebacker Gabe Powers of Marysville High School was willing to put off his decision for another year and go through the proper recruiting process. He’d seen all he needed to see from Ohio State since it’s 30 miles away from his hometown. There wasn’t much more for him to learn. But he wanted to give the other 17 schools who’d offered him a chance to state their case. A recruiting dead period — which has now hit its seventh month — prevented him from doing his due diligence by getting on those campuses to make a proper evaluation. No one is sure when he’ll have the chance to do that and, at some point, denying the obvious stopped making sense.
