How Ohio State football could play a winter season and still compare itself to Clemson and Alabama


COLUMBUS, Ohio — College football poll voters could have more influence on the 2020 season than they’ve had since the start of the College Football Playoff in 2014, and maybe since 1992, when the creation of the Bowl Coalition began making opportunities for the No. 1 and No. 2 teams in the country to meet in a bowl game. Before that, polls picked a champion from among the best teams, many of whom never met on the field. A national title was subjective. But it was legitimate. That’s the way the game worked. An objective on-field determination was never assumed in this sport. It could be that way again this season.
