
“Earning one’s stripes” means you’re deserving to be accepted or respected by other people in your profession. Cameron Martinez has already earned his stripes in the Ohio State football program, so to speak. More appropriately, the Buckeyes’ “Black Stripe Alert” has been granted to the true freshman from Muskegon. According to the official OSU football website, the black stripe is a symbol of buying into the program and conducting yourself the right way on and off the field.
