A stressed brain never gets time off. But at least better methods now exist to help alleviate the pain and anguish associated with emotional duress. As the planet observes World Mental Health Day on Saturday, it is worth noting how athletes whose seasons are affected by COVID-19 are better able to deal with the disruption and uncertainty than prior generations. It wasn’t long ago that a caveman mentality ruled sports, when the usual advice on how to deal with emotional discomfort was to “suck it up.” The typical athlete reaction was to bury the pain, joke to teammates about needing to “go lay on a shrink’s couch” and suffer in silence.
