COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football has no excuse for being surprised by the next trick play an opponent tries. Rutgers brought the circus to Ohio Stadium on Saturday night, opened all the cages and let things get weird. That was the only way the Scarlet Knights, a 38-point underdog at kickoff, could match up with No. 3 Ohio State. It could not work, and did not, as the Buckeyes rolled to a 49-27 victory. Like a heavyweight champion squaring off with a toddler, though, a straight-up contest had little value to the Buckeyes. Especially when they led 35-3 at halftime.
