COLUMBUS, Ohio — For seven weeks, Ohio State football watched the college football season begin and unfold while the Buckeyes could not play. Three weeks in, the Buckeyes received the last thing they wanted or needed — another weekend off. The cancellation of Saturday’s game at Maryland belongs on a familiar 2020 list of things both shocking and inevitable, both troubling and prudent. Maryland felt it could not play after eight players tested positive for coronavirus in the past week. The Buckeyes knew this announcement could come regardless of how diligently they avoided COVID-19. The pandemic already cost the university millions of dollars in athletic revenue and the sense of normalcy football brings to campus each fall. Saturday’s game adds to the toll.
