
COLUMBUS, Ohio — When Justin Fields needed to leave the game in the first half last Saturday at Michigan State, CJ Stroud replaced him as Ohio Sate’s quarterback. Stroud came in for one snap, handed the ball off, and yielded to Fields. Stroud’s big moment came in the fourth quarter, when he broke off a 48-yard touchdown run for the final Buckeyes score in a 52-12 victory. That early snap, though, seemed more important as to the potential status of the backup quarterback situation. Both Stroud and fellow freshman Jack Miller had played few mop-up snaps thus far. Neither had been presented with the opportunity to play early in a game as Fields’ actual substitute, until Saturday.
