Grading Justin Fields in Ohio State football’s loss to Alabama in the National Championship Game


MIAMI — In what could potentially be his final game as Ohio State football’s starting quarterback, Justin Fields didn’t play his best game, but he also didn’t play his worst in the 52-24 loss to Alabama in the National Championship. Fields completed 17 of 13 passes for 194 yards and only one touchdown while running for another 67 yards. Those aren’t the eye-popping stats from the win over Clemson in the Sugar Bowl, but they were decent numbers given the way things played out offensively. The Buckeyes lost electric running back Trey Sermon three plays into the game, throwing off the gameplan for the rest of the night. Losing him took away big-play opportunities in the play-action passing game resulting in a low number of yardage. The most impressive stat of the night was that he managed to go a full 60 minutes without being sacked for the first time…
