MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Ohio State’s season began with an ending — the abrupt cancellation of a promising season with no apparent resolution. Then came a late reprieve, followed by the dread of daily testing, the unexpected cancellation of games and teammates pulled off the practice field. The Buckeyes continually fought off both Big Ten opponents and the coronavirus pandemic. Ohio State finally encountered adversity it could not solve. His name was DeVonta Smith, and the best player in college football lifted Alabama to a 52-24 victory over the Buckeyes in the College Football Playoff national championship game at Hard Rock Stadium. Alabama completed a 13-0 season for its first national championship since 2017 and sixth since 2009.
