Michigan hockey blanks Ohio State 5-0 to complete weekend sweep


Michigan’s first home shutout against Ohio State since 2002 gave the hockey team a weekend sweep over the Buckeyes. Sophomore forward Johnny Beecher, a 2019 first-round pick of the Boston Bruins scored 2 minutes, 23 seconds into Saturday’s game, giving junior goalie Strauss Mann the only insurance he needed. Mann made 30 saves for his third shutout of the season, while the ninth-ranked Wolverines (8-6, 6-6-0-1-0 Big Ten) received goals from five different players. “Real good first two periods,” Michigan head coach Mel Pearson said. “The team was ready to play tonight right off the get-go. I thought we did a nice job defensively limiting Ohio State on their chances, then we took advantage of ours. I thought our power play did a nice job moving the puck around, but we were skating.
