Michigan hockey bounces back from ‘tough call’ for ‘gutsy’ win over Ohio State

ANN ARBOR – There was no panic on Michigan’s bench as the referees reviewed Ohio State’s game-tying goal early in the third period Friday. While the replay showed the Buckeyes (4-8-1, 4-7-0-0-1 Big Ten) were clearly offside entering the Wolverines’ zone before the goal, because a Michigan player regained possession before OSU scored, the goal stood. But the ninth-ranked Wolverines (7-6, 5-6-0-1) responded by scoring three goals in the final 10 minutes en route to a 4-2 win at Yost Ice Arena. “Tough call, but I don’t think our guys totally understood the rule at the time, so they weren’t real happy with it,” Michigan head coach Mel Pearson said. “But of course I knew it and tried to calm them down and just get them refocused to play with it.
