
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio State football coach Ryan Day will again need to replace an important defensive assistant this offseason. Day announced Friday morning that co-defensive coordinator Greg Mattison will retire at the end of the month. Mattison has held that role during both of Day’s seasons as head coach, first with Jeff Hafley in 2019 and with Kerry Coombs last season. Mattison began his college coaching career as a graduate assistant at Illinois in 1976. Notable stops included 13 years at Michigan over two stints, including six combined seasons as defensive coordinator. He spent eight years at Notre Dame, including five as defensive coordinator, and three years with the Baltimore Ravens, two as defensive coordinator.
