Canzano: It’s what Ohio State’s Gene Smith isn’t saying the Pac-12 Conference needs to hear


Don’t know if you caught it but Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith was recently asked about a report that mentioned him as a possible candidate for the Pac-12 commissioner job. “Pure speculation,” he said. “Honored to be mentioned,” he added. Smith told the Columbus Dispatch, “I have not been contacted by anyone.” What the Buckeyes’ AD didn’t say was, “I’m not interested.” Smith didn’t either say, “Not going to the Pac-12, are you kidding me?!?” And this serves as the most interesting development for the conference since Larry Scott was told to take his pay in Traveler’s Checks. If Smith does want to be the Pac-12?s next commissioner, this search just might just be over. The conference should just save $75,000 in search-firm money and get Smith to sign on the dotted line before he changes his mind. Because when a candidate this promising doesn’t bow out at first…
