Ohio State football’s coaching staff changes continue Ryan Day’s preference for familiarity


COLUMBUS, Ohio — When Ohio State football needed a successor to Urban Meyer following the 2018 season, athletic director Gene Smith promoted from within the program. Perhaps Ryan Day’s own preference for continuity and familiarity in coaching hires is merely coincidental. As he continues to establish his coaching identity, those qualities have clearly taken priority in terms of assembling a staff. For the second time in as many years, Day promoted a quality control coach into a true assistant position. Parker Fleming takes over as special teams coordinator. Corey Dennis was promoted to quarterbacks coach after the 2019 season. Fleming’s promotion resulted from Day’s decision to shift Matt Barnes from assistant secondary coach and special teams coordinator to full-time secondary coach.
