COLUMBUS, Ohio — Michigan has landed five-star recruits in back-to-back class one, but unlike quarterback J.J. McCarthy in 2021, this one comes with a caveat. It’s applaudable that the Wolverines were held to hold off Ohio State and USC to keep Will Johnson home to follow in his father, Deon’s, footsteps. But it’s not the type of commitment that deserves some hyperbolic reaction that Jim Harbaugh is ready to turn this around in Ann Arbor and turn that program into a national contender. You don’t celebrate Michigan for landing — despite him being the No. 11 player and No. 5 cornerback in the country— for the same reasons you couldn’t celebrate Ohio State football for signing defensive end Zach Harrison (2019), offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. (2020) or defensive end Jack Sawyer (2021).
