What if Ohio State football hadn’t hired Ryan Day to replace Urban Meyer? A Buckeyefly Effect


COLUMBUS, Ohio — When Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith simultaneously announced the resignation of head coach Urban Meyer and the elevation of offensive coordinator Ryan Day as Meyer’s replacement in December 2018, I called it a risk. This is 39-year-old Ryan Day, first-time head coach, taking over one of the top five programs in college football and replacing a three-time national champion. There is reason for optimism. But there’s some risk to it as well. That’s how I finished my column that day. A year later, I talked with Smith about how well everything worked out, and how he reached his decision on Day.
